Because they are made with South African pears, presumably? It certainly doesn't claim to be a recipe from there.
Not one for student halls in the 70s!

This is my variation of this south African dish. It's very tasty and very easy to make. I think it'd be great with a vegetarian meat substitution too.

Lamb Bobotie with Yellow Rice (made 8 servings)

Bobotie
• 1 lb. Ground Lamb
• 1 cups Onions, Diced
• 2 tablespoons Curry Powder
• 2 tablespoons Vinegar
• 1 teaspoon Ginger paste
• 1.5 cups Canned Tomatoes
• 2 firm Bananas, sliced
• 1 cup Apples, diced
• .25 cup Sliced Almonds
• 1 tablespoon Apricot Jam (Sugar Free)

* Brown the meat and drain the excess fat.
*Combine everything but apple and banana and simmer for 15 minutes. Gently stir often!
--Add diced apple, then continue cooking 10 more minutes.
--Add sliced bananas and cook 5 more minutes.

Yellow Rice
• 2 cups Rice (uncooked)
• 1 tsp Turmeric
• 1 tsp Garam Masala
• 1 pat Butter
• a small handful of Raisins or Currants

Just cook the rice as you usually would (I use my rice cooker), but add the turmeric and garam masala. After it's done, stir in the butter and currants. I didn't think to flavor the rice until the cooker was almost done so I stirred it in after it was done. This method is fine too but as you can tell, I didn't get it quite evenly over all of the rice.

The leftovers are fine the next day, but the banana starts to brown so it's not quite as pretty.

A South African recipe. I thought this was a little bit on the bland side, but I didn't realise it's usually eaten with chutney. This would have probably done the trick.
