Finding Jamaican Food and Drink in the UK
Why leave Jamaica and move to the UK. Well the weather is not one of the many reasons why. The bright sunshine enjoyed by Jamaicans and tourist to Jamaica does not move to England when you do (Unfortunately!!!)
Moving to another country always throws up lots of issues. How will I fit into the new culture and how will I keep my heritage. One of the major issues is about Food and Drink. Although you will be well fed when you move to the UK, you will probably start to miss Food and Drink you are familiar with from back home.
The UK has a large Caribbean population from Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Grenada, St Lucia and Jamaica. Most of this population live and work around the big cities like London, Manchester and Birmingham.
To find Jamaican food in the UK is very easy. You can go into most Tesco stores and find Dunn's River Jerk Seasoning and DG Ting in the World Food section. Also if you live around London or the big cities finding Jamaican food is fairly easy with specialist shops, Caribbean Take-Aways and Caribbean Caterers.
Things become more difficult when you are not in those cities and you haven't got access to the range of food places in London and other Cities. For example someone living in Scotland or Oxford or Cornwall will have great difficulties getting Jamaican Products. For these people Easy Caribbean Shop stocks Jamaican and Caribbean products and these can be sent to people all over the UK and Europe. Their website can be found at www.EasyCaribbeanShop.com
There are lots of Recipes for Jamaican cooking and these can be purchased from all bookshops or can be searched for on the web. Levi Roots has a cookbook published with lots of great recipes using Jamaican food and drink ingredients. He also has opened a take-away in London, which serves fantastic Jamaican Jerk Chicken and other food. Jamaican food is one of the tastiest in the world and with so many different herbs and spices it is no wonder why.
Hundreds of years ago Jerk was created and still continues to be an amazing dish with lots of great flavours. When you move to the UK from Jamaica it doesn't mean you have to give up Ackee and Saltfish or Jerk Chicken. Everything you need to get through the cold winters is right here.
Ian Ranghel-Smerdon is a writer passionate about Caribbean Cooking and Cuisine and bringing those flavours and spices to the UK.
